What Aroostook.ME is
Aroostook.ME is a community and travel guide to Aroostook County, Maine. It covers every one of the County's 64 municipalities — the cities, towns and organized plantations that have their own local government — plus the unorganized territories inside the County and the neighbouring communities just past the line.
The heart of the site is a directory of towns, with a page for each one carrying the facts people actually need: how many people live there, how big it is, how to reach the municipal clerk, where the town sits on a map, and what is in the neighbouring towns.
Where the numbers come from
Community facts are not written from memory. Every figure on a town page is traceable to a primary source:
- Population, land area and coordinates — the U.S. Census Bureau's 2020 Census Redistricting Data (P.L. 94-171). The year is shown next to every population figure so you always know what it measures.
- Municipal clerk address, phone and fax — the Maine Secretary of State's municipal clerk and registrar list.
- Official town websites — linked only after the address was opened and confirmed to be the community's own site. Where a community has no working website, the page says so instead of guessing.
- Places to eat, stay and visit — written by people who live in the County, and checked with the businesses themselves before listing them.
We are not a government site
Aroostook.ME is a private, independent publication. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Aroostook County, the State of Maine, or any town government. We link to official sources because they are the best answer to a question about a town, not because we represent them.
Where we list a business, we say so plainly and offer a way to be removed. Where we are wrong, we would rather be told than be left standing.
How the site is built
The site is a small set of static pages. There is no tracking script, no account to make and no app to install. Town pages are generated from one data file, so a correction made in the data file shows up on every page that uses it — and nowhere else.
When a fact changes, it is updated at the source and the "last verified" date on the page moves with it. If you spot something that is out of date, tell us and we will fix it.
What we are trying to do better
- Give every community a page worth reading, whether it has 8,800 people or five.
- Say where a number came from, and what year it is from.
- Link people straight to the official source instead of paraphrasing it.
- Stay fast, accessible and free of clutter.
