How the County is organised

Maine gives communities two levels of local government, and Aroostook County uses both. Sixty-four of the communities here are municipalities with their own elected government. Nine areas inside the County are unorganized territories, which means they have no town government — the State of Maine and the county run local services there.

Plantations are a Maine-specific form of local government that sits between a town and an unorganized territory. Aroostook County has 9 of them, including Glenwood, which is the smallest municipality in the County.

The four regions

The County is usually described in four broad regions. Each has its own character, and each has its own town list in the town finder.

Unorganized territories

These areas are inside the Aroostook County line but have no town government of their own.

County government

Aroostook County is governed by a board of county commissioners and run by an elected county manager. The county handles what counties do in Maine: county roads, the sheriff's office, the registry of deeds, the probate court, the tax collector, the emergency management agency and the unorganized territory services department — which is exactly the department that looks after places like Bancroft and Sinclair.

The Aroostook County government keeps its own directory of County municipalities, and the State of Maine publishes a full list of municipal clerks. Both are useful starting points when you need official information.
